Default InDesign-PDF Font Frustration

I don't remember this occurring with PageMaker, but recently I've been having an annoying problem in regards to font use.

My most frequent DTP exercise is either an 8-page newsletter or a letter-size poster for local non-profit organizations, which are composed in InDesign. The newsletter is exported to PDF to send to the printer. The posters are exported to PDF to e-mail to various board members for their review. All too often during the export process I get a "due to licensing restrictions, this font cannot be embedded..." error message for one or more of the fonts used, and it does result in general visual nastiness for when the exported PDF is viewed on another person's computer.

Because I do this on a volunteer basis, I cannot afford to buy all the font sets of which InDesign of might "approve," so I suppose I need to find a way to determine whether a font is appropriately-licensed before using it.
Does anyone know of such a diagnositic trick or some other way to deal with this PDF paternalism?
