Default Free VMware

After posting about the VMware beta for Mac, I looked around the site a little more. I was surprised to find some free software from VMWare. It looks like the free VM Player is of no use unless you or someone else creates a virtual session for it using one of the pay products. But, there are some Virtual Appliances for free. These are OS/Application combos that run in a virtual machine.

Very interesting, and probably revolutionary. But of what practical use for us? I don't know, except that I recall some people here wanting to run Windows and Linux at the same time. And I saw Linux among the Virtual Appliances. But I don't know how far this can be taken in terms of installing new applications into that virtual appliance.
