Default TypeCon2006, Aug 9-13, Boston

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) began as a sort of face-to-face get-together of online font fans in a motel in a Boston suburb. It has grown substantially since those early days, and now sponsors an annual conference that may rival ATypI’s in substance and variety.

This year TypeCon2006 will be in Boston from August 9 through 13, based at the Hyatt Regency hotel with some sessions taking place at MassArt. Although the SOTA block of hotel rooms has been filled, there may still be some rooms available at the special $169/night rate. Or, if you live within range of Boston, you can attend parts of the conference without booking a room.

There are several events open to the public at no cost, including the Type and Design Education forum on Thursday from 1:30—6 p.m, led by our favorite font-ID’er, Norbert Florendo, with eight others including James Craig, whose Designing With Type has been a design school staple for 30 years.

Besides Norbert and James Craig, the speakers include (to name a few plucked from the list) “Fud” Benson, David Berlow, John Berry, Matthew Carter, Dave Farey, Mark Jamra, Mike Parker, Thomas Phinney, Paul Shaw, Brian Sooy, and Robin Williams. And that is just a sample!

Check it out. There is still time to register.
