Default Unique Font Charactristics for Web Publishing

What little I know about fonts is constrained to those which are used in the book and magazine publishing arenas. Web publishing seems to be a unique arena, but I do not understand what certain fonts are more appropriate for web publishing than other venues.

What fonts are especially recommended for web publishing and why?
