Default Sequence number from InDesign CS?

My better half has been tasked with designing posters and tickets for an event.

The tickets will be A6 (148.5x105mm) printed 4-up on A4 (297x210mm) and need a unique sequence number on them. Approx. 400 tickets are needed, and the organisers were prepared to hand-write the numbers, but is there an automatic way of doing this in InDesign (CS)?

At the moment all I can think of is to use the data merge in MS Word, having a data source document of 400 empty records and using the 'merge record #' field to insert the unique sequence number in each ticket.

I've tried to search the forum about this topic, but I'm probably not using the correct terms. (I feel this must be a subject that has come up before…?)

Any ideas, anyone?
