Default Palatino: Good article in Print

The May/June 2006 issue of Print magazine (should be on good newsstands all over North America, or by subscription) has an excellent review by Paul Shaw of Linotype’s Palatino Nova. It is a mini-history of Palatino, one of the most popular and most pirated of all typefaces. Palatino is also a face with a complex past.

The article explains the differences in all the various Palatinos:

  • Foundry Palatino, a display font, which is still to my eye the most beautiful
  • Linotype’s original text Palatino (wider than the foundry version) — this is basically the face listed as Palatino on millions of computers today
  • Aldus, narrower, more graceful, designed to be Palatino Book
  • Michelangelo Titling (fabulous titling face I used to set on the goofy PhotoTypositor), Sistina (its bolder sister), and Phidias Greek
  • Zapf Renaissance, little known, livelier, and lovely (from Scangraphic)
  • Palatino Nova, designed by Zapf with the assistance of Lino’s type director, Akira Kobayashi. This new version brings all the family members together in an OpenType font
Shaw is a great type reviewer. He is a calligrapher and type designer by training and experience, has excellent insight into type and how it works (or ought to work), and writes very well. He reviews type regularly for Print. Almost worth the price of a subscription, but there are other interesting articles as well. This issue includes a European design survey and articles on Danish cartooning, Italian package design, and more.
