Default Mac Mini Lock-Up

I helped a friend set up a brand new Mac Mini this afternoon. It was going swimmingly until I installed the software that came with the mouse and clicked the button to restart. The Mac will not get beyond a white screen. Turning the computer off and on just displays until the same white screen. I suppose this is a driver incompatibility issue. Is there anything we can do other than take the machine back to the Apple store for service. Will they be able to do anything other than rebuilding the OS?

Until the lock-up, the machine was a delight. My friend's monitor is an old 800 by 600 CRT, and I was amazed at how readable the screen was.
