Default Dratted junk faxes!!

I have had it with junk faxes. It is not enough that they use my paper and toner but they come in the middle of the night and wake me up. (I cannot turn off the ring altogether — it gives just one soft ring, but sometimes that is more than enough!)

Most of these are touting stocks, and most have an opt-out phone number on the bottom of the page. At first, I would call that, but then I found the pace was accelerating, so I decided it was a bad idea to confirm my phone number to these creeps, so stopped bothering.

At one point I had accumulated almost a ream of paper in junk faxes; since New Year’s I have accumulated 28 more. I decided I was mad as hell, went googling and came up with an interesting site run by someone else frustrated by junk faxes. He has set up a page entitled “Diary of an abused fax line/machine” that includes a log of some of his, a few of which were the same as mine.

Unsolicited faxes from entities you have no relationship with are forbidden under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) of 1991 and by the Junk Fax Prevention Act of 2005. The FCC is responsible for enforcement:
Federal Communications Commission
Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau
Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Division
445 12th Street, S.W.
Washington, D.C. 20554
So today I sent my list to the FCC, offering to forward the actual faxes. We shall see if there is any response. (They have an online reporting form, but it only accepts one fax report per form; phooey on that!)

I wish I could figure out how to report the stock sheets to the SEC, but they make it even harder than the FCC.

But I feel better about trying to do something, even if it may not work.
