Default Tagging and ID

This thought was triggered by another discussion with a similar subject but it doesn't quite fiit that thread, hence a new one.

Does InDesign import and format tagged text in any format (xml, html, ID-specific tagging ...)?

More specifically:

I help a group produce a directory from time to time. Currently, somebody has to type all the directory information into Word or whatever other app they use to prepare the document. And format it.

Tedium. To the max.

I know they have most if not all of the information in a database of some sort, and assuming that it can be exported to CSV, tab delimited or the like, I could write a program to read the data and spit it back out as a tagged text document of some type. They're also considering buying InDesign.

If ID can read the tags and map them to existing styles, we could save several minds and double that number of hands. Not to mention weeks of labor.

Can it do that?
