Default Controlling referred image

How can I apply CSS and/or HTML to (or otherwise control the position of) the large version of an image that is accessed by clicking on a thumbnail?

When the large image pops up it is hideously glued to the absolute top and left of the screen — I would be content to have it sit 50px or so off the edges. And sometimes I might want to add a legend or caption.

Sometimes, clicking a thumbnail on a merchant site brings up the larger image in a neatly sized web page, with additional text. That is fancier than I need, but how is that done? PHP, I suppose.

Thanks.
