Default image distortion in acrobat 7

I have a problem. I am using the following three programs in conjunction with each other to do a bit of desktop publishing:

Microsoft Word 2003
Adobe Photoshop CS
Adobe Acrobat 7

Using Photoshop CS, I export PNGs to put into the MS Word document, and then use the PDF generator that comes with Acrobat to turn the Word document into a PDF. Problem is that the images come out all distorted in Acrobat: choppy and misaligned (the image seems to "skip", if that makes any sense), and the transparency parts get darknened and blocky (although they're still somewhat transparent).

The images were originally saved at 300 dpi. Any thoughts or suggestions?
