Default Adobe Reader 9: Disable updater?

Is it possible to disable the Updater that runs every time after Adobe Reader 9 opens?

It's a PITA to me because every time I open an online PDF file, MSIE7 freezes for a short time while the Adobe Updater is loading, until I tell it to disallow or allow it to run. (UAC in Vista.) I've got the options set to never update automatically, but that doesn't seem to stop the bugger from running. I don't care about updates, I'll look for them manually when and if I want them--not every time I open a PDF file.
