Edmund Arnold, newspaper design guru
If you ever read a newspaper with pleasure and ease, you owe a debt to Edmund Arnold, who redesigned many papers making them more attractive and easier to read. We owe to him the near-standard 6-column array (now, sadly, in its death throes), so that each line averaged 1.5 times the width of the 9-point Times Roman alphabet — which is considered to be most readable.
He wrote many books — and his Modern Newspaper Design (1969) is still useful reading for any designer (not only those who specialize in newspapers. He died February 2, 2007, in Roanoke, Virginia.
