Default iPod Help?

A client has lent my husband an iPod to use at Le Mans but she didn't send a manual and he can't find Help, a guide or manual on the iPod itself. He has plugged it into his computer (laptop running WinXP SP2) via USB and it appears to come up normally. However, within a minute or two a large circle with slash through it appears on the screen and it says, "Do Not Disconnect". Wait, wait, wait ... nothing happens. "Safely Remove Hardware" says the device is busy and shouldn't be removed. My husband powered down and tried it on his backup laptop with the same result.

When the iPod is not plugged into a computer everything appears to be fine with it.... He has left a message for the client but so far has not had a call back. Anybody here have any idea what's up? And where is "Help" on an iPod? We're feeling pretty stupid - just about every teenager on the planet seems to have one of these things and we're clueless.
