Default Snow Leopard ships early, cheap

Apple started shipping the new 64-bit version of OS X 10.6 (aka Snow Leopard).

There are few new features — this version streamlines the code (saves GBs in file space compared to 10.5) and speeds up the Mac.

It also breaks a few apps, according to the Snow Leopard compatibility list, but most up-to-date programs seem likely to work. Adobe CS 2 and 3 suites do not, and Pogue says some part of CS 4 may not.

The upgrade costs $30 for users of Leopard (10.5), which is amazing.

I ordered the software (it should arrive Friday) but don’t think I will actually upgrade for a while — I’ll wait at least until the first update just to hedge my bets.
