Storage 'bot?
Does anyone know what makes this storage array "robotic"? I admit I'm hampered by not knowing much about any sort of disk array, but I can't tell from the description what makes this one different from any other in terms of "managing" storage. ??

Judging by the blurb here:
http://www.drobostore.com/storefront...?skuNo=1818232 it's probably a very stripped down computer, likely just enough ram to be configured and monitor the requests for the hard drive info. Operating system is most likely on a ROM chip or something. You probably access its controls through a web interface. __________________ Tim. |

The Drobo's causing quite a bit of excitement - see
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2146050,00.asp It's early days, but the idea of cheap commodity SATA drives, hot-pluggable, with auto-healing is very attractive. No trays required, and the connectors on the back of every SATA hard drive are surely durable enough for this kind of service (not for daily swap, though). OTOH, one of the drive manufacturers tried something like this two years ago (USB only; virtual volumes; proprietary data scattering). It was slow and buggy. I'd wait, remaining in intrigued mode, if I were you. |
