Default Creating a PDF file in Quark 6.5

I've tried several ways to do this and i keep getting the message that Quark is unable to create the pdf file. I tried creating a direct pdf. I went into preferences and changed it to project, project_layout, then I tired creating a posscript file, but Acrobat wouldn't distill it. PLEASE HELP!!!!!! THANKS.
