I'd use Aggrobrat Pro:

1. Check the file properties
You can see which fonts are used and how large the page is.

2. Then look at output preview
check for RGB and spot color elements, make sure that things which should be pure black really are (and whether they overprint correctly), look for daftness like overprinted white objects. Check for total ink coverage, too.

3. Use the preflight
this will warn about unembedded fonts and other iffy matters.
You can tweak the preflight rules to make up your own. I called mine the RPM Rules, then amended it to (of course) RPM Rules OK!
