Default Found in my stuff: U&lc v1n1!!

I often deplore my packrat tendencies, but this morning, for a change, it paid off: I discovered a copy of the very first issue of ITC’s U&lc in a stack of other large-format publications. I was astonished. I thought I had all the issues except the first, which was published in 1973.

The cover is dense, with detailed TOC at left; beginnings of five arcticles at right, with jumps inside; and 7 square illos down the center. It has the iconic original logo.

A few of the articles in the first issue:
  • Typography and the New Technologies by Aaron Burns (Tiffany)
  • Stop the “Perpetrators” by Edward Rondthaler (Avant Garde med 8/10)
  • What’s so Hot about Robert Indiana? by John Canaday (Souvenir)
  • Is Avant Garde avant garde? by Herb Lubalin (Avant Garde Light, 18?/24)
Condition isn’t bad, better than most in the big stack of issues I have in a cupboard — possibly because these issues were stacked between other publications printed on better paper. These are yellowish (and the type sure would benefit from more contrast!), intact, not brittle.

I’ll see what interesting turns up in them.
