Default Simple syrup

Mint Julep? How about the recipe handed down from Louisville newspaperman“Marse Henry” Watterson:

"Pluck the mint gently from its bed, just as the dew of the evening is about to form on it. Select the choicer sprigs only, but do not rinse them. Prepare the simple syrup and measure out a half-tumbler of whiskey. Pour the whiskey into a well-frosted silver cup, throw the other ingredients away, and drink the whiskey."

Um - how does one "prepare the simple syrup"? (And what does one (not) do with it?)

Given the last line of the recipe, I don't see that it matters too much how you prepare the syrup. ;-)

Usually though, it's just sugar boiled in water.

'julep (noun): a sweet drink made from sugar syrup, sometimes containing alcohol or medicine.' [From the COD]

But julep is said to be ultimately derived from the Persian for rose-water.

That sent me looking in Wikipedia where I found this:
Quote:
The word itself is derived from Arabic: ماء ورد‎ Māʾ ward and Persian: گلاب Golâb, meaning rose water.
My language antenna starts waving confusedly at that Arab "Māʾ ward" (frankly, I don't believe it has anything at all to do with the word "julep"), but Golâb does sound likely. In Iran, rosewater is ubiquitous, sold in bottles, and used to flavor many dishes, including (often) my favorite faludeh (though other flavorings may be used as well).

(I'm already looking forward to having faludeh again!)

This refers to an Arabic word, "julab" ... that should get the antennae twitching more than Wikipedia's Arabic reference.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/julep

Thanks, that makes much more sense. I haven't looked but I suspect that word was originally in the Wikipedia article and someone edited it for another word without looking at etymology...

Mix 1 cup water with 2 cups sugar and boil until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture thickens.

If you flavor it with lemon or orange juice, you can poke little holes in the top of a plain cake and pour it over to make a very nice dessert.

Ah thanks. That's a nice idea!

It is — one I use often. And you can flavor simple syrup with cointreau or other liqueur if you like — it is quite versatile.

If you use enough of it with the right sort of cake, voila! — baba au rhum! But those are really saturated in the flavored sugar water.
