Default 2-line cordless phones

Our cordless Panasonic phones are dying, and they never were wonderful. So I am looking for new ones. They must be expandable (we need 5 stations) and 2-line, and I want an answering machine so I can cancel the phone company service.

Consumer Reports recommends DECT 6 in an environment with Blue Tooth or other wireless equipment, so I decided to go looking for some of those. And found few brands: Panasonic, Philips, RCA, and Verizon (which I didn’t think of as a manufacturer). I would like a corded base station for use when the power is out (and for the more comfortable handset), but only found one Panasonic with that.

Philips (SE6591B) had a lot of negative comments on Amazon; of 5 buyers reporting, 3 or 4 sent them back. And the handpiece looks especially clumsy, a smooth rectangle — unlikely to be comfortable and easy to lose hold of.

Verizon (V500AM-2) is the prettiest (in what is generally a homely category of product), and has a lot of features (many of them silly IMHO). Claims to have extraordinary sound quality; couldn’t find any comments or reviews to support this claim (or not). It is also topped at 5 stations; the others all allow more (in case we need more in the future).

Panasonic (KX-TG9392T). I am so annoyed at our current (ca 2002) Panasonic phones that I am somewhat wary of the DECT 6 ones, but they supposedly have improved the things we have disliked: volume and sound quality, run-time between rechargings, and battery type. And I could have the better handset in the base phone, which will be on my desk.

GE/RCA ViSYS (25250RE1) is the cheapest, allows up to 10 handsets, and also has no negative reviews. The seller in the link above says the sound quality could be better but also says he has had no complaints.

I also found a long thread on an Amazon forum about DECT 6 and dropped calls because of conflict with wireless computer routers (including Airport), so wonder about the whole idea.

Any advice?
