Default Woody on Operating Systems...'-}}

I have just recently learned about Woody Leonard's Ask Woody site and have begun reading it more often. His April 5th "If Operating Systems were Airlines" is a hoot and a half.

A few excerpts:

"EIGHT AIR Every flight encounters turbulence no matter what route is logged. Passengers arrive frazzled and disoriented. The fleet was upgraded but the instrument panels were designed by Fisher Price – confusing the crew. A free ticket on TEN AIR is forced on all passengers – so they will continue to love flying."

"MAC AIRWAYS The cashiers, flight attendants, and pilots all look the same, feel the same and act the same. When asked questions about the flight they reply that you don’t want to know, don’t need to know, and would you please return to your seat and watch the movie."

"UNIX EXPRESS Each passenger brings a piece of the air plane and a box of tools to the airport. They gather on the tarmac, arguing constantly about what kind of plane they want to build and how to put it together. Eventually, they build several different aircraft, but give them all the same name. Some passengers actually reach their destinations. All passengers believe they got there."

And Mac Airways: Ask them to do anything complex and they give you a blank look. That never ends. All that moves is their eyeballs, which spin and spin and spin and spin and .....

ROFL!!!

I don't know if this is still the case but many eons ago, a friend with a mac told me that there was a problem with it. I asked her what the error message was and she told me it was a frowny-face.

I thought she was kidding until I realized she was serious...

Yep. And as far as I know, that might well be the Official Technical Term for it. Either that or "Sad Mac".

I don't think so; I don't believe they've used that particular "messaging" in years. Now it's the spinning beachball that invokes fear and loathing.

At least it is slightly entertaining for a while, as a Linux user I usually get some incomprehensible message you need a degree in nerdiness to understand when things go belly up - that's when I just pull the plug and start over.

Even an incomprehensible message is at least something and you have a (possibly minor) chance of deciphering it but a frowny face and/or spinning beach ball is totally, completely and always useless...
