Default Very strange InDesign behaviour

I normally work in InDesign (Mac G4 running Tiger, InDesign version CS) with the pages in a single column, but for a recent job, just before output to PDF, I changed to Facing Pages so that I could output a spread.

The printer's prepress people noticed that on one page, the text wasn't running around the illustrations. Only on one page. The following page had the text running around normally.

When I checked in InDesign, the text wrap palette showed the correct settings, but the text wasn't wrapping.

Changing back to single, not facing, pages fixed the problem and I was able to output the PDF again, correctly this time.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before?

Yes, I've seen it a couple of times -- it's an annoying bug. You can solve the problem by toggling the setting of Text Wrap Only Affects Text Beneath, which forces a full recompose. Just turn it on/off, then when the doc has recomposed, reverse it. I wrote a script to fix it, but it doesn't tend to happen often enough to warrant it.

Thanks, Shane. I was beginning to wonder if it was just me.

Does it still happen in CS2? I'm wondering if I need to bite the bullet and buy the whole suite, especially as Acrobat is about to be upgraded to 8 and I'm still on 6, along with Photoshop 7.

I think that's where I struck it, but it was quite a while ago. I rarely have cause to change from/to facing pages.

InDesign CS2 is certainly a big step up from CS, if only for speed. But the way Acrobat is out of step with the other apps makes the decision a bit more complicated.

Same here, which is why I was taken by surprise on a Sunday morning!

Indeed. I suppose, seeing as CS2 still has the bug, I should just wait until CS3 comes out.
