Default Must Have Software

My significant other may bestow upon me the opportunity to add some high powered DTP software to supplement a new machine. That new box will be running XP and SuSE Linux. Much of what I have currently harks back to the days of W98.

Some version of Adobe Acrobat is Numero Uno on my wish list.

I was wondering what else others might recommend.

I am not a graphic designer, but I do need image manipulation and am very big on typefaces and fonts for technical (equations, engineering drawings) and non-technical publishing (historical and current maps).
