Default Beware Trojan spam

Surfing a fringe website, naughty I know, a pop-up comes up saying I have seven Trojans in my computer, and a scan is in progress that looks at my whole computer, in 20 seconds flat, and finds 137 suspicious objects. I didn't allow them to download an expensive program to fix this, but then the only way to get rid of the pop-ups was to switch off the computer. Full marks for persistance there.

A scan by AVG taking two hours found one item of spyware. I wonder what would have happened to me if I had accepted their kind offer.
