For characters like 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc., I need to instruct a typesetter to set the characters st, nd and rd at the top of the line rather than the bottom? In the jargon of the industry, how are such characters differentiated and specified, top or bottom?

Another vote for superscript.

Realistically, if you need to instruct a typesetter to do that, you probably need a different typesetter. They should know to do that automatically.
