WordPress 2.1 released

Ella (codename for WordPress 2.1) has been released from captivity! This is a much recommended upgrade following the hack attempts of a wide range of blogs last week, including attempts on Matt Cutts' Blog!

I was poised to tell my hosting company's automated thingummy to do the upgrade, but there was this warning:

Click on Upgrade only if
- no files, languages, themes have been modified
- you haven't added mods to this installation of WordPress

Well, gee...I've edited style.css and footer.php in my chosen theme, so where does that leave me? Can I still upgrade??

Yes, as your template will remain un-touched. Just make sure you have a complete backup of all the files including the database, and disable any plugins that you have activated. These can be re-activated after the upgrade.

The people who have problems with upgrades are those who hack the core files, but cannot remember why or where......

So I have to deactivate Sidebar Widgets, too? Rats. That'll hide stuff. Oh well, hopefully the upgrade goes fast and without incident, and I can return the site to normal within minutes.

Since I wouldn't know a "core" file if I sat on one, I suppose I'm safe.

Well, it appears the upgrade went without a hitch, I've turned my plug-ins back on and all looks fine and dandy. Thanks for the help, Kelvyn!
