Default Corel Ventura 10 symbol limitations

I'm trying to import foreign characters into Ventura 10 that are not available in the MultinationalA or B sets under Insert | Symbols. If I simply copy and paste them from Word, nothing shows up in Ventura. Is there any way to get these "extra" foreign characters to appear?
Thanks very much.

I work on a Mac (and have since 1984), so have no direct knowledge of Ventura Publisher of any vintage. But I have a few ideas that may lead to an answer.

What OS and version are you using?

What fonts are you using? What format — OpenType, TrueType, Type? About how old are they?

Ventura version 10 was released in 2002, and I am thinking that you may have an old-fashioned font conflict.

Let us know more.

I agree with Kathleen that we need the info she has requested before we can diagnose the problem. The characters will not show up in Ventura if they don't exist in any of the installed fonts. First you must have a font installed that contains the characters you need. Ventura 10 may or may not support the font(s) in question but we can't figure that out until we know what the required font(s) are.

In situations like these, I use the Windows accessory Char Map. It does a good job of pasting in the appropriate symbol. I've never had a problem with characters not showing up when I have done this.

I don't know for sure, but it may be that the venerable Ventura only supports 8-bit fonts (i.e. 256 characters). If you try to give it the code for a character beyond 256, it may choke.

Only suggestion I can make is to save the Word file as rtf format, and then import that into Ventura (I think VP can handle rtf ... it should). That might correct the problem.

It does. In fact, if you want to export your file on "Save," it will save it in rtf format.

Ventura 10 doesn't support Unicode. So the if this is a Unicode font, they won't show. If it is a unicode font, then I'm not sure what the solution would be. I have not touched Ventura in ages. But one generic way is to find use a non-unicode version of the font, and use its special characters font file to replace these characters.

I wonder if VP supports double-byte fonts. Those would've pre-dated Unicode support
