Default Top 10 typefaces (2006?!!)

Graphic Design USA reports on its recent survey of subscribers, 86% of whom say they “recomend, specify, buy, or approve design-cpacity fonts.”

Reader comments stress the importance of type choice in a design project. They think of type as pivotal — “at the top of the hierarchy of design elements” and commend vendors for producing so many wonderful fonts.

So why, I wonder, is this the top 10 result when readers are asked to list the family of typefaces used most?
  • Helvetica
  • Univers
  • Futura
  • Garamond
  • Frutiger
  • Times Roman
  • Goudy
  • Gill Sans
  • Arial
  • Trajan
I realize that many of these nicknames encompass more than one type family or collection — but Arial? Good grief!
