Default Changes in Compuserve email?

Tonight I signed into Compuserve forums and was met with big black box with white text telling me I'm using a third party email client with my settings wrong and security changes coming in December will or might cause problems. I tried to capture this screen, but for some reason I got logged out just as I was about to do it. But, the link on that screen lead to an article about how to set up an email client.

I have a Compuserve email address and I the SMTP and pop servers i deal with are at csi.com. I don't know how any of this would affect me, and I don't use any of the listed clients. But maybe when I'm not so tired I can figure out what to do. I'm using Qualcomm Eudora.

As I understand it - they are changing the pop, imap and smtp severs to only use secure (SSL) connections beginning in November. At that time any email client trying use a non-secure (plain text) connection will fail. The web interface will continue to work. If you client is old and does not support secure connections you need to upgrade. You also need to adjust your preferences to use the secure connections. One of the articles tells you how to do that for the popular clients and another article gives settings for generic clients. It mostly means making sure your are using the correct ports for secure connections.

I received an email last week or so about this. The email wasn't particularly well written as they never stated clearly what was being changed. The email included a link to a help page with the POP3/IMAP settings--scroll down a bit on the page. I checked my settings in Eudora for my cserve email account and I've got things set up as they have suggested. This is supposed to take effect sometime around Nov. 7th...

Here's the info:

POP3:
Recommended hosts:
Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.csi.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.csi.com

Alternative hosts:
Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.cs.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.cs.com

Make sure SSL encryption is enabled for the incoming and outgoing mail server. POP3 - 995 - SSL
SMTP - 465 - SSL
SMTP - 587 - SSL / TLS

IMAP:
Recommended hosts:
Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.csi.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.csi.com

Alternative hosts:
Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.cs.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.cs.com

Make sure SSL encryption is enabled for the incoming and outgoing mail server. IMAP - 993 - SSL
SMTP - 465 - SSL
SMTP - 587 - SSL / TLS

I used to be better at figuring this stuff out. But, can you or someone else just tell me how this translates to my email client.

I'm using Qualcomm Eudora

Possible SMTP settings

The part of the interface that says "secure sockets when receiving" I have to pick one of the following:

Never
If available STARTTLS
Required, Alternate port
Required, STARTTLS

There is also a place where I can turn on one or more of the following

Authentication allowed
Use relay personality, if defined
Use submission port (587)

Possible POP settings
Same choices as above

If available STARTTLS
Required, Alternate port
Required, STARTTLS

As for IMAP, I've never used this for any email from any source. Should bother with this?

Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you...I done 5 screenshots my setup for cserve mail in Eudora. Note that because I created a website within compuserve, I have an alphabetic cserve email address in addition to my classic numeric cserve address so for any data field labelled "User Name", the alphabetic cserve email address is required. For any data field labelled "Email Address", I use my classic numeric cserve email address.

Note that the last 3 screenshots are from Tools > Options.

Lastly...I will be testing sending/receiving mail on Nov. 7 and will post back if there are any changes needed--these settings are currently working just fine...

Ok...here you go...let me know if you have questions:

Those settings give me an error message about an unacceptable certificate. This happens with both my csi account using the csi server, and my aim account using the aim server. But it also gave me the option to just accept or reject this. I didn't know what to do so I simply closed the window without clicking either.

Oh...I get those every once in a while and I have to fumble about to remember how to fix it.

This is off the top of my head but...when you get a cert error, go to Personalities and select Properties for the email account with the issue. Click on the "Last SSL Info" button--you may need to do this on both the Generic and Incoming Mail tabs in Properties and you have to have tried to retrieve/send mail so that there is active data in the pipeline.

The Connection Infomation Manager window will open. Then click on the "Certificate Information Manager" button which will open a new window.

You should see a "Server Certificates" section and you need to click "+" symbol to open the dropdown--you need to drill down opening each level in turn by clicking on the "+" symbols. You need to look at each entry to see which one is problematic, highlight it and then click on the "add to trusted" button.

You may need to do this a couple of times--I never quite remember the sequence and so I just keep at it until all the little face icons are smiling.

Hope the above proves useful...

Thanks. I got it working. Thanks for the heads up about having to do this more than once.
