Default PC malware fixing techniques

That's pretty amazing...

I spent 3.5 hours last week cleaning up my sister's laptop when she not only opened one of those stupid UPS spam emails but then compounded the error by clicking on the attachment! It took over her laptop, wouldn't allow Malwarebytes Antimalware to start, she couldn't get online and the malware kept popping up warning messages about spyware and malware on her laptop. It was a right royal mess...

Using her 2nd laptop, I was able to find a fix process and via a usb stick was able to get the fixes on to her problematic laptop, clear the crap and get MBAM to run which got rid of the malware...

I told her that if she ever does that again, she's on her own...'-}}

Ah, well — what can you do. Keep a sharp eye on her! <g>

LOL!! Actually...she's much better about stuff than my other sister--the one in ME--who, I often think, has less technical savvy than my mother did which is very unkind of me to think...'-}}

Wasn't it somebody here (Hugh, I think?) that advised making a bootable CD/DVD with antimalware software on it? Seems very wise. If you don't boot from the infested HDD, whatever it's infested with never gets a chance to start up.

Aimed square at yer head, ma'am. ;-)

I've also got a couple of friends who regularly run into various computer problems and aren't 100% reliable about being able to find things like driver and software CDs, so whenever I do a rescue mission, I collect at least the drivers for their computers on a thumbdrive and eventually pop those onto a CD.

I also try to keep a thumbdrive, cd or USB HDD updated ... more or less, when the whim strikes ... with current copies of malware removal software, the Sysinternals tools and generally useful stuff I'd want on every PC like Irfanview. Even if the stuff's not entirely up to date, I can at least use it as a reminder of what to grab when I have to go help out a cyberdistressed friend.

FIgured it was...'-}}

I think one thing that allows me to be lazy is that my sister has a 2nd laptop which she uses enough so it's quite current and it's easy to just fire it up and get the stuff I need--note the "I"...'-}}

I may be not remembering things correctly but if memory does serve, it's tricky to create a bootable backup cd/dvd for WinXP--I may be remembering Win2000's difficulties--so that's another reason I've not created it...

I think maybe you're remembering Win2k. I've got an old copy of Nero that can make a DVD/CD bootable ... you just choose the Bootable Data option, IIRC.

Looks like ImgBurn will too ... haven't tried it myself, but so far it's been pretty good about doing what it promises to. Good stuff, ImgBurn. And the price is right $0n target.

I wondered if that were the case...

Ohhh...I have Nero 6...I might check that out and if not, then I'll take a look at ImgBurn at that lovely price...'-}}

Thanks!

I had to try ImgBurn after saying that, of course.

I didn't have any luck with it; it does offer to make a CD bootable and on their site there are even instrux for creating bootable Windows CD/DVDs with service packs slipstreamed.

However, it requires that you have a boot image ... a minimal OS to boot to. That's already supplied on the Windows install media, so their instructions just use those.

To use ImgBurn, you'd need to use another utility to make the image file for it to use.
I know they're out there ... just can't remember the names offhand.

Nero comes with (IIRC) a licensed boot image from Phoenix or someone like that.
