Default Word Is Driving Me Crazy

Please help. I'm working on a document at work, and we have to use word here. It is not my choice, but I'm stuck. In the original document, there were footnotes.

I converted the footnotes to endnotes and everything seemed fine. Then when I opened the document again today, the area where the footnotes were, reappeared, but with no footnotes. However this seems to be considered as used space by Word, hence I cannot get rid of the space, and it has broken up the pages to the document leaving me with half pages. According to Word, I cannot delete within the footnote area, but can only delete the footnote by getting rid of the reference.

Unfortunately, the references are no longer there, they were deleted then I created new references and specifically formatted them as endnotes. I am at my wit's end at this point. Do any of you know how I can rid myself these spaces in the document???
