Default Buying A Good Compact Camera

I got a Canon Rebel XT 500D last year but need a compact camera as well. I'm thinking a Canon would be good to maintain consistency and would prefer to spend under $400. So far I've looked at PC World's "Top 10 Compact Point-and-Shoot Cameras" (link) but thought I'd ask on here for any camera aficionados. My brother has an older, apparently still popular Canon model (retails for around $200 I think) that features color selection and time lapse video which I find very cool. Having something with these features but overall better photo quality and customization would be great.
