andrew: I use the desktop as a work area, moving stuff on and off. Postit notes here and there. Fences seemed like a way I could isolate the shortcuts. I can't lay them out like you do because they just get lost in with all the other stuff.
Ahhh...I understand now...

Had an idea...what if you created a desktop wallpaper that was divided into separate areas by lines--basically a user defined grid--say a solid background color with another color used to define the separate areas. Then, you could make a habit of putting individual desktop icon/shortcuts into a particular grid-box--if the underlying organization is fixed enough, you could even add a descriptive text label to each grid-box as a reminder of what goes in each grid-box.
