Default spam and cpanel settings

I finally got around to looking at the new-to-me cpanel settings for my website and I used the Wizard thingie--I don't usually do that--and set a catch-all email address. At the time, there was a little warning in the back of my head that I didn't pay enough attention to...

Today I received a spam email from an address I'd created last year and then deleted the address a few days later when I started receiving spam left and right within an hour or so of establishing the address--it was basically a dictionary-generated address.

The interesting thing (probably a coincidence) was that this is the same address that was used with the spam I received today--first spam I've received from my domain in a quite a long time and isn't it interesting that I established the catch-all address 2-3 days ago.

One of the options in cpanel is to use the "Discard with an error to sender" but the problem is I don't want to send an error message to the sender because I think it encourages spam because the spammer then knows they've hit a live domain and my guess is that they will then begin to bombard the domain to try and get around the block that's been set--fortunately none of my other estalished address would be found in a dictionary.

I asked UH support about my options telling them why I didn't want to use "Discard with an error to sender" and basically they said, "Discard with an error to sender" is the "proper way of rejecting the mails to invalid addresses".

My feeling is that when one is dealing with spammers, "proper" has nothing to do with it.

I discovered that there are advanced options one of which is "Discard" which I think means that the email is deleted and no bounce message is sent to the sender. This option is labeled "Not Recommended" but I'm leaning towards setting this option...
