Default Any Drupal users here?

I've become the somewhat unwilling go-to guy for help with a non-profit's site done in Drupal.

It's recently been reworked, moved to a new host and updated to the latest version of Drupal, which on the whole is probably A Good Thing.

But there are several employees and interns who need to do some serious work on the site to finish up the new version. I've set up a set of user privileges that give them the power to do what they need w/o turning over full admin privs to them.

So far, so good.

The problem is that the @#*$^ privilege settings won't stick. I go in as admin, assign a user "Manager" privileges. It seems to stick. I log out. I log in as the user, no joy. They can't do anything. I log out, log back in as admin and lo, the privileges I assigned before are gone for that user.

Sometimes if I kept poking at it long enough, I could get it to stick for some of the users, but not one in particular, whether on her old account or a new one I created for her.

Then a change by the DrupalExpertWallah wiped out all of my newly added accounts, so we're back to square one. And I still can't get the privs to stick.

Anybody know if this is a known bug in Drupal? I've looked at their site a bit but so far, every hour I've spent on it has been an hour wasted. Can't find anything there, and if I find it, it's for a different version of the software. Sigh.
