Default Mayday! Is it possible to add a 100% black gradient to a duotone?

I've got Creative Suite 2, so if this can't be done in Photoshop, maybe there's a workaround in the other apps?

Working on a rush book cover, client wants a duotone (black and green -- green is still under negotiation, right now I'm working with Pantone 569) photo background, with black-to-transparent gradients at top and bottom.

The gradient needs to be 100% black at the very top, fading to transparent (over the duotone photo). It's couple of inches deep.

Similar area at the bottom of the page -- 100% black at the very bottom, fading to transparent over the duotone photo. Again, a couple of inches high.

I can't figure out how to add a 100% black gradient -- it always wants to be the duotone. I can't get that green out.

Any ideas?
