Default Adobe...can it be any more annoying?

As I noted in my other thread, I've been working on an old Dell laptop getting it ready to send up to ME for my (shhhhh...great) niece.

I decided to update her version of Reader (9) and tried to do it from the Help but it was a no go so off I popped to Adobe's website. It took me forever to find the Reader download because although there was what turned out to be the appropriate link on their homepage, the current version of Reader is ridiculous. It's something called "Acrobat Reader DC" where "DC" translates to "document cloud".

Oh joy!!! Oh fabjous day!!!

Just what I always wanted. To be attached online to Adobe for any pdf I read...and...Adobe has now figured out how to sneakily charge for Reader because of course, that "document cloud" ain't free...

I went to oldapps.com, downloaded and installed Reader 11...

If all you want to do is to read PDFs there are a few alternatives, Nitro Reader is one I've used, or use your browser with a plugin. I am on Linux and use Evince, which I believe is available for Windows.

There might be some security issues with older versions of Adobe Reader, as with any older software.

The Reader is still actually free but my suspicions with this "dc" crapola is that one is likely to be innundated with ads/reminders/pita-ness about paying for "document cloud" access...ugh!!!

I'll check out Nitro Reader...thanks!

I use Foxit, and it's quite good for a lot of things. I also have the DC version of Adobe on at least some of our computers, and haven't had anything pester me about the cloud. I just ignore the features that would require cloud.

Good to know! My expectation was that pestering in Reader would be the norm...'-}}

You should just go steal a shopping cart from the nearest grocer. Then sell all of your belongings and move to a street-life existence. Once there, leach off of Starbucks WiFi and from the proceeds you gained from liquidation you will be able to pay that cloud charge.

After a while (bath free) things may start to smell (though).
