There was nothing personal in my use of micromanage!

I use it as do others doing Windows support to refer to changing default settings for locations Windows uses often in the belief that they are creating real locations (not on the disk) but different from those defaults like My Pictures when both are links to elsewhere.

I was not this time referring to on-disk locations but choosing some different location in the belief that My Pictures, for example, was a "real" location when it's a link to a set of locations or "names" might be a better word.

Where it can fall apart is for example with backup programs that may be programmed to automatically back up a set of locations that is the default for the version of Windows or for an application running under it.

OK. I do understand that My Pictures is a fiction. But I don't like being presented with fictions when I'm trying to save or locate a file. My Pictures and its kin offer me no real benefits; if they suit others, that's fine, so long as we're not all forced into living with it. So far, we're not. I'm sure MS is working on that. ;-)
