I hate software that is written to contact the mother ship for no damned good or useful reason. It's one of the reasons I use a firewall that works with both incoming and outgoing online access requests notifying me of either and allowing me to grant or not grant access.

Apple have clarified their position and there are lots of links explaining how to stop it happening, but it's pretty insensitive of Apple to do it so sneakily.
