Default Publishing Peeves

I wonder if book designers bother to check their choice of font for readability. Perhaps run some speed and comprehension tests using a varied panel of readers. It's not as if books are brochures, where looks usually outweigh utility. And certainly, the font choice should not be so esthetically unappealing that people are turned off. But when a book is 2000 pages long using a small font size, the choice of typeface should not be one with diminutive letter forms.

And then there is the other direction with the "big font" books. Like one that used Warnock Pro in a large size with narrow letter spacing. I'm sure this would look great on an invitation to wine tasting, but in a book it's like sitting three feet from a wide screen TV.

And then there are the designers who segment pages by using color blocks. If it is already hard to read a small font, it makes no sense to use a blue background to make it harder. I emailed them and suggested they use a dividing line to separate things. A few years later the new edition came out. It didn't use lines. It had an even darker shade of blue.

And finally, I've run into a few websites where the publisher provided a PDF with a few pages of the book. This is nice. Try before you buy. I wish they all did this.
