Default Mail Order Catalogs

Five years ago I purchased some clothes from the Woolrich website. After that they started sending me mail order catalogs. And it was not long before I started receiving a catalog from LL Bean (which also has an outdoorsy clothing line). I bought a couple shirts from them. And over time I've received catalogs from more places. Some with ridiculously high prices, and others with lower prices. But all in the same category of clothing.

There is now doubt in my mind that Woolrich sold their mailing list. And now also maybe others I buy from are doing the same. I wonder about this, though. They make money by selling their mailing lists, but they also potentially lose my business by doing this. Maybe they believe they are differentiated enough in this market that it's worth the additional money they get from the list. Who knows. But as a result of me getting these other catalogs, I've found other places to shop.

Anyway, I'm not complaining. I enjoy looking at these catalogs. But I'd love to see a marketing expert's research that justifies this.
