The Vista DVD should be able to function as recovery media. I haven't looked recently but I seem to recall that it works like the Win 7 DVD: one option is recovery of an image. I have a copy and can check on Sunday.

Thanks for the information. Steve's giving me one of his unused copies of Vista, so that should solve the problem.

But I just raised the price: you now must report on how this image recovery thing works. ;-)

FWIW, I've looked over the list, and then looked at the actual sites, and Paragon looks the best to me. I'll be testing this one first. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/

Although I wonder if this will be a problem:

Automatic data exclusion - automate the process of building up contents of the future backup image, by excluding irrelevant data such as movies, music, etc.
Why would I want to exclude that, unless I'm just doing an OS backup.

Your choice -- I guess for some people they might be too ephemeral to want to back up? Or might already be backed up somewhere and unchanged?

I've often heard that the best version of Vista is the one that's not installed in your PC. ;-)

After hearing so many bad things about Vista I kept waiting for it to melt on the screen. The only annoying thing I noticed is it kept logging off the user. But maybe that's just the setting. I have not looked into that yet.

Vista is fine on adequate hardware (quad core cpu, 4-8 gb RAM). Too many machines were underpowered, esp. not enough RAM.
