Default Indesign Multi Doc Footnotes

I have a large indesign file and I have placed multiple actively linked docx word documents. The problem is, the footnotes restart for each document, even though I have them starting at the right number in my word file. I need them to stay continues throughout the piece, but they all start over at 1. Is there a way to fix this?

You're probably using a more recent version of ID than I am (I'm on CS3), and I don't have Word, so I can't experiment to reproduce your problem, but have you checked the footnotes options? In CS3 it's under the Type menu/Footnote Options...

There's an option to "Restart Numbering Every: (Page, Spread, Section)". If that checkbox is checked, and you're placing your documents as individual sections (or pages or spreads), that could be the problem.

There may also be some fiddling you can try in the Place dialog, such as "Include...Footnotes" and "Remove Styles and Formatting from Text and Tables".

Good luck! (And welcome to the Forum!)

Hey Howard.

I am in fact using ID cs4, not 3.

I have checked the footnote options, and restarting is not checked. I tried to just manually set the "restart number," but that effected all the documents I had linked (so that they would all start at 97, or whatever number was selected).

Under the place options, I do have include footnotes selected. I also have import styles automatically selected. But even if you select remove styles it doesn't help, it will still start over at 1.

Sorry, I'm grasping at straws, as none of my ID projects have involved footnotes to any significant extent. Hopefully someone else here can jump in and help you. I know there are others on the forum who use ID.

I suspect that your problem has something to do with the way you've structured your project. Have you set up your project as a "Book"? (Book in the strict ID sense: File/New...Book. That is, a bunch of separate files representing chapters that are virtually bound together and synchronized using ID's "Book" tools). This gives you some more numbering and synchronization options. Or do you have all your placed docs in a single ID file with unthreaded text frames? If the latter, I would suspect that has a large role in your footnote numbering issue.
