Thanks for those links...I had found the compusol page but wasn't sure it was the software you mentioned...

In the meantime, I found a page of "free" notetaking software and downloaded a few to see what they were like. CintaNotes seems (so far anyway) to do what I need it to particularly with no need to go online. I may even go for the paid version ($25). Since Evernote is supposed to be so nice and because Kayza said she thought you didn't have to register, I thought I might look around (maybe at oldapps) to see if I could find an earlier version which would allow me to at least take a dry run with the software to see if it's something I'd find useful and if so, then I wouldn't be so pissy-assed about registering for the current version...

I've got a couple more pieces of software to check out and I'll report back...
