An ACK (retro +1) to Steve's answer. Most laptops have the fan intake on the bottom (for both processor and graphics cooling - that's frequently a common heatsink). Unless you're anorexic and wearing Spandex, your thigh will block that intake. Computing on a matress or sofa is similarly incendiary.

Treasure that cutting board. Another nice trick is, when the machine's on your desk, to prop up the back with two rubber erasers. That drops temperatures 5C on the Dell in front of me. A cooler board with two fans only cuts it 2C more, so I've stopped using that.
