I got a new laptop about a month ago and what was non-negotiable for me was a 17" screen. The reason is that my eyes are old and I can't easily read text on a smaller screen even with whatever size adjustments the operating system offers. Of course, if portability is a major concern, a 17" laptop is heavier. But I rarely use it except on a lap desk in my lap.

I think 1366x768 is totally unacceptable. One thing you'll notice on just about any widescreen is that the bottom buttons of some dialog boxes will be clipped off and inaccessible and Windows won't let you move them up. My 17" laptop is 1600x900 but I still have this problem. In Linux I can move any window but not in Windows.

I got an HP i7 with 6 gigs and a 750 gig hard drive. I dual boot Win 7 64 and VectorLinux. Win 7 64 is a bit of a pain because a couple of my old favorite 32-bit programs won't install at all. They do install in Win 7 32. This computer is more power than I need because I don't do much other than Web and e-mail. For heavy use I think a separate keyboard would be nice and I need to get a wireless mouse to replace the touchpad, which I hate.

I hope you're happy with what you decide on.
