Default Studio Artist

Studio Artist is an automated painting program that also allows the user to work in manual or assisted modes. And unlike most program of this type, it also allows the user to do autorotoscoping on animated material. Plus, it has a slew of special effects, and provides for vectorizing.

I watched the demo movie, and unfortunately, the demo applied effects to a painting. Because paintings are already painted (simplified, dramatized, color-enhanced), it doesn't really show us what the program can do with photographs. But if you have some art as a starting place, this program can make some interesting changes.

I used to be active in a forum where a woman used this program a lot on photos, and she found it helpful. I never tested it back then because there used to be no Windows version. And I can't really test it now.

BTW, I emailed them to ask about closed captions and/or providing the scripts. I was told they will look into this and get back to me. When I watched the demo it sounded like the VO was working from scripts, so I hope those will be available.

OSX 10.4.10 or higher, Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7

Thanks for asking about closed captioning...viewing one of their videos froze my system so badly--mouse gone, couldn't ctrl-alt-del--that I had to hit the reset key on my system...

It's snowing here in VA!!! UGH! Winter is here...just turned on my heat...

I decided to download the demo. It never times out. It limits the software by only allowing you to us several photos they provide. Luckily, they are decent test photos. But not as good as using photo with which I'm familiar.

This is much more than a faux art filter. It's a full application. Meaning, number of features, variety of effects, and complexity of how the program generates them. It can also apply the effects to movies. It's hard to tell if they would be useful, though. Because what looks interesting at first glance, can turn out to be useless in practice.

I find the interface to be annoying. Things are not where I expect them to be. I have looked in the manual for a couple thing and can't find them. I've looked at their tutorial movies, and they are not the best. The program is beginning to annoy me. And it's not a cheap program at $399.

Anyway, I know people online who like this program. I can understand why. Lots of power. I just don't know if its for me. I am no longer able to take on computer tasks that require a lot of thinking or many steps.

Of course, the big question for a lot of people is whether the results look like real oil painting, real watercolor, etc. For me this is a non-issue. This is not Painter. And worrying whether it looks like natural media is like fretting that a sawtooth waves from a synthesizer don't sound like a real orchestra.
