Default Dead Laptop Battery

It finally happened. It lasted longer than I expected but my battery is no more.

My laptop kindly informed me about this fact, and that it was out of warranty as well. Cheeky!

Checked out HP's prices but didn't like them very much. Found a couple of sites supplying third party batteries and I can get one that will give me more hours per charge for about 2/3 of what a HP branded one would cost.

I know they say it is as good as an original part and all that. But before I hit the buy now button I just wanted to ask if someone here have any experience of third party laptop batteries and if so, how good are they?

I've bought them in the past and one that I got sent to a son who was working in Alaska went there and is still working years later ... it was for an HP Compaq laptop.

That was from a US source -- can't remember who now -- and I've lost touch with the UK market ... I think Dabs was the last I bought anything from and that would be 20 years ago when they were just up the road from where I lived!

I have only bought one third party notebook battery but I was quite happy with it. It was the 2nd battery for a Mac Ti Powerbook and lasted as long and worked as well as the original.

I bought one for a Dell Inspiron I have for my Council work and it's still going fine 18 months later.

I am conscientious about letting it run right down once a week, even though they say it isn't necessary. Hubby & I had new laptops (both Dell, not the same model though) about the same time. I ran mine down every week, he only ever used it on the mains or very occasionally for a few mins on battery. Result: mine still has >2 hours life after 3 years; his has about 2 seconds.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I feel less apprehensive and will get a third party battery after all.

Yes, more than happy with third party batteries. The same goes for third party power supplies, too: no need to pay well over the odds for a branded one.
