andrew: I'm back to using my bluetooth mouse.
What a pita! I have not tried the new Logitech M305 wireless mouse I got for my next-door sister on my sister-from-Maine's Win7 system but when I plugged in your basic everyday usb mouse (not wireless), it worked just fine with no need to install drivers...

When I plugged in the M305 (wireless) mouse's dongle into a usb port on a WinXP laptop, I got a hardware recognized message and the mouse started working right away with no need to install drivers...

I'll see if I can try the new wireless mouse on the new laptop and report back...
